Even though new vehicle sales dropped by 4.1 percent in South Africa over the 2015 period, this has not affected new car launches and upgraded models arriving in the country during 2016. South African car buyers who are in the market for new cars, SUV’s or bakkies can look forward to the launch of a variety of new vehicles.
New Car Launches & Upgraded Models
Alfa Romeo new releases
The 2016 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider arrived in South Africa in time for the new year and is already with us. The 4C Spider is an open-roof version of the Alfa Romeo 4C. The new and improved Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde arrives at dealerships later in 2016.

Audi new releases
New models from Audi are set to be available in South Africa from February. The all-new A4 launches next month and the second-generation Audi R8 in May. The A3 promises finer lines and a more polished look and we’ll see these on our roads from November.

BMW & MINI new releases
There is no holding BMW back. Their creative juices have been flowing and this year will see the launch of a number of new and face lifted models. These include:
- The new 7 Series – (January)
- The high performance M2 Coupe (April)
- The M4 TS (September)
- Plug-in Hybrid version of the X5 (May)
- The long-wheelbase 760 Li (late in 2016)
MINI fans will see the arrival of the new Clubman launching in March and a convertible which will be in showrooms from March.
Chevrolet new releases
There won’t be many launch parties at Chevrolet in 2016. Their only addition to the family this year will be a face lifted Captiva SUV which will be available from February.

Ford new releases
2015 saw a wave of new product from Ford. 2016 will be a quiet year but the much anticipated launch of the new and powerful, all-wheel-drive Ford Focus RS is something to look forward to in May.

Jaguar new releases
It’s a first for Jaguar in 2016 with the introduction of its F-Pace SUV during the second quarter of the year. This is one for SUV lovers to keep an eye on. South African Jaguar fans will also see the launch of the all-new XF sedan in February, The British manufacturer claims it is one of the most ‘efficient’ cars on the road in its class due to its aluminium rich construction and new generation engine.

KIA new releases
The only addition to the KIA range this year is the new generation KIA Sportage which is very popular in this country. Further than this, KIA fans will have to wait until 2017 for new products.

Lexus new releases
In the early weeks of 2016, Lexus introduces its fourth generation RX SUV. There will be facelifts made to the Lexus IS and GS at a later stage in the year. It is not yet a certainty, but we may also see the new LC Coupe (featured at the Detroit Motor Show in early January) before the end of the year.

Mercedes Benz new releases
It’ll be a busy year for Mercedes Benz. The SMART brand returns to the South Africa market in 2016. The new rear-engined SMART Fortwo and Forfour models are set to land during April or May.
We will see the following introductions and arrivals from Mercedes Benz over the following annual term:
- A plug-in hybrid S500e
- The Merc SLC (an updated SLK)
- A facelift for the A-Class
- The S-Class Cabriolet
- The C-Class Coupe
- The all-new E-Class

Toyota new releases
The new Hilux bakkie lands in South Africa in February. During the second quarter expect to see the new Fortuner SUV, the face lifted version of the Toyota 86 Sports Coupé and an all-new Prius Hybrid in dealer showrooms.
